Former Congressman Charlie Stenholm (D-TX) and members of Students for Saving Social Security

Right now we're using a program designed in 1935 to provide retirement for a generation born in 2005. Obviously, society has changed, while Social Security has not.

For instance, the current system was put in place at a time when few women worked, divorce was rare, and large families were the norm. Today, most women work, divorce is common and women are having fewer children later in life or not at all. All this translates into unfair practices when it comes to paying benefits to women. And when it comes to minorities, the problems are just as bad.
