Americans Sound Off About Social Security - For Our Grandchildren

AS A MOTHER, ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT THE MONSTROUS DEBT THAT CONGRESS IS LEAVING YOUR CHILDREN?

  Suzanne, Grandmother, 63, Oregon

Yes! My grandchildren are beginning their lives with a burden near $200,000 apiece to support senior citizens on Social Security and Medicare. This debt has been created by our politicians who continue to increase benefits for seniors without concern for this young generation which will have to pay the cost. As a senior citizen myself, I find this unfair and immoral. It's time for congress to responsibly fix Social Security and Medicare or these children and their generation will have nothing in their senior years.

Of course I'm concerned with the mounting debt being incurred by Congress. Will our children have to endure significant tax increases to offset Congress' spendthrift ways? Will the quality of government programs like Medicaid and Medicare and Social Security suffer cuts and solvency during our children?s lifetime to offset the debt? The answer is yes. We are spending more than needed instead of saving for the future; our children will be ones responsible for repaying this debt. We as a society must evaluate our government and our involvement in government in order to cultivate a sustainable future for our children.

How can I not be? I never thought it was a conversation I would have to have with my child. Growing up, we were told after we got our very first job that we would get our money back when we retired. It gave us hope and now to have to explain to a young worker that the money is taken and is supposed to be there when you retire but probably won't be is appallingly unfair.
