Americans Sound Off About Social Security - For Our Grandchildren

IS THE WAY POLITICIANS ARE HANDLING SOCIAL SECURITY IMMORAL?

Well, your question almost asks me to say "yes," but fortunately I really do think they're being immoral. I've worked a good deal of my adult life, and my husband has worked. We'll be fine. But I'm not sure that Social Security will be such a good deal for my kids. Then you read that Congress is using money from the Social Security trust fund for other programs. That is immoral. You don't pay into a retirement program your whole life and expect to find out your money is being used for foreign aid or corporate welfare.

Answer is Yes.

Social Security was started on a promise that funds would be available to benefit people who contributed in the future. Social Security funds were to be kept separate, like a trust, but are now commingled with other governmental funds and used in the government's budget. Reports now indicate that there will be a shortage of Social Security funds to support baby boomers and all generations to follow even though we all contributed our share. This will result in one or more of (a) the cutting of benefits; and/or (b) the elimination of benefits; and (c) an increase in Social Security taxes. It is like a Ponzi scheme. I think it is unethical for the government to keep taking our money on this broken promise.

Can you name one way in which our politicians are handling things that is not immoral? Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if you had written to tell me that ss was totally bankrupt. I am hoping that by the time I am eligible there will be enough ss left so that they can send me a little check every month and I can go down to the IHoP with the other seniors once a month and have a short stack or something. But, I am not counting on it and I imagine that those who are will be disappointed.
