Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton – 2008 Presidential Candidate

Senator Clinton's alliance with the issue is unfortunate, given that she is the Democratic Party's current frontrunner. The truth, of course, is that one of the reasons she is the frontrunner is that she's learned to duck controversial issues like this. The most depressing statement she's made to date has got to be "Social Security is not a front burner issue." As if the millions of baby boomers and their children and grandchildren won't be left holding the bag when the crisis hits.

Most recently, the Clinton campaign has announced support for a new retirement savings program that would grant families a $1000 tax credit to induce them to save. The problem, of course, is that low- and moderate income Americans have little or no discretionary income to use to create savings accounts in the first place.

Clinton: Opposes any proposal that would divert resources from Social Security and into private accounts. Did not offer a specific proposal to keep the program solvent. (The State, 4/22/07)
